Day 1: Cape Tribulation Day Trip

Your action-packed Cape Tribulation full-day tour begins with the beautiful scenic drive along the coastline north of Cairns, past Port Douglas and through the small township of Mossman heading towards the Daintree National Park. Our experienced guides will inform you of the amazing diversity you will see when entering this 130 million-year-old rainforest.

Our first stop is at Mossman Gorge “Wurrumbu” where you will be met by the traditional owners of the land you are about to explore. Here you will participate in a traditional “welcome to country” and smoking ceremony with a Kuku Yalanji tribal member. Followed by a quick breakfast stop (at your own cost) before heading to Mosman Gorge for a refreshing swim in the cascading water and majestic pools that make Mossman Gorge such an iconic place to visit.

Heading North on the other side of the river where the road narrows as we pass through some of the world’s oldest living rainforests. Our highly trained guides will give expert rainforest interpretation during a 45-minute guided walk at the Marrdja boardwalk. Be amazed at the huge diversity you will encounter, everything from low-lying ferns and shrubs to the massive rainforest canopy and even mangrove ecosystems all in one short easy walk.

A short drive further north and we arrive at Cape Tribulation Beach where you can kick back with the sand in your toes and watch the waves roll in and enjoy an awesome lunch as you dine on the famous Cape Tribulation Beach followed by a relaxing walk along the beach. On our return trip, we have an (optional stop – time permitting) at the Floravilla biodynamic Ice Cream Company featuring a minimum of 26 exotic fruits and traditional flavours. Then for a great photo opportunity at the Alexandra Range Lookout before boarding the Wildlife River Cruise which is a great opportunity to search for crocodiles and other wildlife whilst learning about the fragile ecosystem of the Daintree River. Then a scenic drive through the majestic beachside village of Port Douglas. If time permits we will stop at the Rex Lookout (optional stop). Returning to Cairns after an incredible day exploring Tropical North Queensland at approx. 7.00 pm

Wonderful trip except for 2 incidents. First was seeing the Mosman Sugar Refinery belching black smoke inside the Daintree Heritage area was of concern and disbelief. The second was to see a vessel from Quick Silver returning from a day out on the Great Barrier Reef again belching out black diesel smoke after spending the day explaining to people the importance of maintaining the reef and their contributing to its decay The heritage area is a bit baffling it’s very important to the general public and visitors but not so much to business of local authorities.

Our guide for the day, Damien, was fantastic. Very knowledgeable about everything we saw and made the day fun. The rainforest was beautiful, a must see. Cape Tribulation, Mossman Gorge were also amazing. Such a good day all around, I highly recommend taking this tour.

Knowledgeable and friendly guide, a good mix of stops, and a beautiful part of Australia to explore. Definitely would recommend.

Great opportunity to see the rainforest. Loved swimming in the Mossman Gorge and the welcome talk by the local aboriginal guide. Driver for the day was good, very knowledgeable and organised. Even got to see a cassowary in the bush. Did not see any crocodiles in the river cruise but still good experience. Cordial drink at the river cruise was delicious as was the ice cream at the stop. Long day but well worth it.

I did this trip in 2008 and decided to do it again, 15 years later, in 2023. It was definitely a good day out. The scenery is beautiful, the group size is just right and the tour guides are knowledgeable but also laid back. I’d definitely recommend it to any9ne visiting Cairns and FNQ. That said, it was not as enjoyable as in 2008. For me, one of the highlights in 2008 was making the Billy Tea (for which the tour is named) and trying damper and various exotic fruits. These were dropped during Covid, I was told, and have not been reintroduced. I’d definitely encourage the company to reintroduce them as this was the part which made this tour different to others I’ve been on.
