Itinerary

Day 1: Frankland Islands

Step on board our luxurious boat the Turtle Islander at Deeral, just 45 minutes south of Cairns, for a spectacular calm water cruise down the Mulgrave River. Keep an eye out for crocs from the panoramic windows as you sit inside in air-conditioned comfort, or step out onto the shaded outdoor decks for a closer look. From the mouth of the river it’s only 10km to the Frankland Islands. The Frankland Islands archipelago is a natural wildlife haven and a protected national park. Beautiful Normanby Island is surrounded by pristine sandy beaches, with rock pools and healthy fringing reefs which can be snorkeled from the beach. Here you have up to four hours to relax and enjoy, without the crowds. Your day tour includes guided snorkeling from the beach, with equipment and instruction. It also includes our popular adventure snorkel safari, snorkeling from the boat along the island’s western reefs. A buffet lunch, morning and afternoon tea are also included in your tour. After lunch, join our marine biologist and Master Reef guide for a walk around the island, discovering the diverse wildlife that flourishes under the water, in rocky pools and in the rainforest.

Soooo glad we chose this tour. All inclusive, comfortable boat trip out to Normanby Island, a tropical paradise. Optional tours you can do during the day are semi submersible boat trip around the great barrier reef, snorkeling safari, guided Island walk. You can opt not to do any and snorkel to your hearts content just off the beach. Snorkel and gear all provided, lunch also provided. Tour was so well organised, staff were lovely and we were lucky with the most amazing weather. We had maybe 50 people on our tour, which felt in no way over crowded. Plenty of room to do your own thing. The reef in this area is healthy and bright, so glad we got to see it, as well as some turtles! Highly recommend.

The weather was not that great on the day of our cruise, but the crew was fantastic - from Kirsteen & John on the bus, to the snorkel guides (Andy & Kelly), and all the others - super in making the most of the day!

It starts with a short rainforest river cruise. Occasionally crocs are seen. Then a short water crossing to Normanby Island in the Frankland Island group. The island is surrounded by reefs, but the area to snorkel is on the protected side. The guided tour is really for beginners, but this side of the island had the best fish life and lots of turtles. Being experienced scuba divers and snorkellers, we felt rushed by the guides, as there aim, understandably, is to keep people together and visible. It may be better to have two groups where more experienced people can have more freedom. Being rushed actually made us more stressed and tired, as we had to exert ourselves to get back to the group. You can see many species of marine life, including turtles, octopus and anemone clownfish, Nemo. You have up to 4 hours to explore above and below the water. The guided island walk was great, looking in rock pools we saw an anemone with fish in a very shallow pool, venomous Cone shells, hermit crabs, sea eagles, a kingfisher and other bird life. There was a fresh BBQ lunch. Optional activities included kayak or stand up paddle boarding. The glass bottom boat also went over the best part of the reef, seeing more turtles. A very enjoyable day.

Weather was not good so snorkeling visibility was zero and glass bottom boat was cancelled due to weather conditions. Great lunch and morning and afternoon tea. Staff were very friendly and helpful. On a nice sunny day this would be a great cruise.

We had a great day with the crew on our trip to Frankland Island. I was a bit nervous as I’m not a good boat traveler and the weather was a bit rough. But the crew were fabulous from start to finish. We were so impressed with their attention to health and safety as well as their knowledge and support. The equipment provided was also great even if my wetsuit was not a perfect fit. While I am a reasonably confident swimmer I had not snorkelled for around 40 years. But with good instruction and guidance I managed to snorkel for around half an hour. Sadly the weather meant that visibility was not great but we still managed to see a turtle and a school of brightly coloured parrot fish. The walk around the island with Chris was great and very informative about the reef structure and the development of the island group. Thank you to Kirsten and the crew for a great day out! We shared the trip with a Japanese group and the young woman who looked after that group was also fabulous.

A great day spent discovering the reef. We saw some turtles, a few clownfish, an octopus, some ray and many schools of fish. The corals looked good, very little bleaching. The lunch was great and was offered in reusable dishes, surprisingly hard to come by in Australia. The tour guides were very friendly and helpful. And the nature was spectacular even in the rainy season.
