Itinerary

Day 1: Port Arthur & Lavender Farm

Today is action-packed and fast-paced, so we make an early start from Hobart and drive directly to the stunning Tasman Peninsula. This area has an amazing history, fascinating stories and spectacular scenery. It is also home to Australia’s highest sea cliffs. We enjoy the panoramic views of the area from Pirates Bay Lookout which provides a great vantage here of the surrounding area. Passing through Eaglehawk Neck and "The Dogline" our Tour Guides will share with you some fascinating stories and history of the area. Then we begin one of Tasmania's "Great Short Walks". We follow a spectacular track, of around 2 km along the Waterfall Bay cliff top. The walk takes around 45-60 minutes, is undulating, but is categorised as an easy walk. The track concludes at the remarkable rock formations of Tasman Arch and Devil’s Kitchen. From here we will drop you off for a short visit to the Port Arthur Lavender (https://portarthurlavender.com.au/). Enjoy a short stop here to wander the Lavender fields, view the distillery, or head straight for the Lavender inspired sweets and treats in the Cafe and Gift shops (The lavender flowers are in their peak bloom from December through to February). As we enter the Port Arthur Historic Site, there is a wealth of information and history to take in and you will have ample time to explore and discover the nooks and crannies with around 3 hours on site. Your entry includes a complimentary Harbour Cruise around the Isle of the Dead, ‘The Port Arthur Experience' a podcast that provides a fascinating introduction to the site, and complimentary site talks throughout the day led by Port Arthur’s expert guides. Discover the grim and violent history of the early Australian Penal system and get a sense of the isolation experienced by the convicts in this “inescapable prison”. With around 4 hours here, you have ample time to walk amongst the main penitentiary; see the solitary confinement cells and many more buildings in this World Heritage open-air museum. On our return to Hobart, we travel via the historic township of Richmond. Arriving late the in the afternoon, you will have time to meander the streets, stop for a coffee, visit the Lolly Shop, check out the Chocolatier and walk across Australia’s oldest bridge still in use – a convict-built sand-stone bridge, reported to be haunted! We drop you back at your Hobart City accommodation around 6.00 pm.

There were several options on this trip. We all went to Port Arthur & a few other sites of interest including Richmond but there was the option of seeing the lavender farm or an animal sanctuary or spend longer at Port Arthur. The guide was excellent and explained a lot of Tasmanian history from the aborigines to how Port Arthur was where recalcitrant Australian transportees ended up, and some of the brutal ways that discipline was enforced. It was strange to be in a landscape so much like idealic english countryside with such a dystopian history,

Absolutely lovely tour well worth the early rise and long day. Our tour guide Nick was very entertaining with a seemingly unending amount of interesting and amusing stories and anecdotes about everything on the tour. A shame we visited while the lavender at the farm was not in season but is still worth a stop to check out the gift shop and try a lavender latte. Port Arthur is the main attraction and a fantastic experience. Exploring the ruins of the original prison before enjoying a short cruise around the bay was a very educational and unique experience. There is also a somber and touching memorial to the victims of the 1996 tragedy. Highly recommend this tour. A great experience with some fantastic photo opportunities along the way. Just make sure to wrap up warm if going in winter!
